Quality versus file size, explained simply
Every image format trades detail for size. JPG throws away information your eye is unlikely to notice, which makes it excellent for photographs and poor for text or sharp logos. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which makes it perfect for graphics and wasteful for photos. WebP is the modern middle ground and is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPG at the same visible quality. If a tool asks you to pick, photographs should be JPG or WebP, and anything with flat colour or transparency should be PNG.
Getting a smaller file without it looking bad
- Resize before you compress. A 4000 pixel wide photo shown at 800 pixels is carrying data nobody will ever see.
- Compression at 70 to 80 percent quality is usually invisible; below 50 percent starts to show.
- If a form demands an exact size in KB, resize first and then step the quality down until it fits.
- Screenshots of text compress badly as JPG. Keep them as PNG or WebP.

Not if it is done sensibly. Most photos can lose more than half their file size before any difference is visible, because screens simply cannot show all the detail a camera captures.
