Cropping is about what you remove

A good crop is one of the quickest ways to improve a photo. Cutting away empty space, distracting backgrounds or a stray hand at the edge draws the eye straight to the subject. It also fixes the practical problem of a photo being the wrong shape: a wide landscape picture will be brutally cut by a square profile slot unless you decide the framing yourself first.

Ratios worth remembering

• 1:1 square, for profile pictures and most social posts.
• 4:3, the classic photo shape used by many cameras and prints.
• 16:9, for thumbnails, presentations and video covers.
• 3:4 or portrait, for phone screens and story formats.
• Free, when you just want to cut away the parts you do not need.

Cropping for documents and IDs

If you are preparing a passport or ID photo, the crop matters more than usual, because those applications specify how much of the frame your face should fill.
