Change Background Color

The requirement that catches everyone out

Passport applications, visa forms, exam registrations, job portals and ID cards routinely specify a background colour, most often plain white or a particular shade of blue. The photo itself can be perfectly good and still be rejected because the wall behind you was cream, patterned, or had a shadow across it. Replacing the background is usually far easier than retaking the photo somewhere with a suitable wall.

Why the edges decide the result

Changing a background means separating the subject from it first, and the quality of that separation is what makes the result look real or obviously edited. Clean, well lit edges separate accurately. Fine hair against a busy backdrop is the hardest case, and stray strands are where the seam usually shows. Nothing about the settings fixes a difficult source photo, so it is worth taking one good picture rather than editing a poor one repeatedly.

Getting a photo that separates cleanly

• Stand a good distance from the wall so you do not cast a shadow onto it.
• Use even, front facing light. Side light creates dark edges that confuse the separation.
• Avoid clothing the same colour as the background you are removing.
• Tie long hair back if you can, since loose strands are the hardest part to cut out.
• Check the requirement before you start, because some forms specify an exact shade rather than just white.
