Choosing between PNG, JPG and WebP
Each format trades detail for size differently. JPG discards information your eye is unlikely to notice, which makes it excellent for photographs and poor for sharp text or flat colour. PNG stores every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots and graphics, and wasteful for photos. WebP is the modern option and typically lands 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPG at the same visible quality.

- Photograph for the web: WebP first, JPG if you need older compatibility.
- Logo, icon or anything needing transparency: PNG.
- Screenshot containing text: PNG or WebP. JPG makes text look smeared.
- Print: keep the original at the highest quality you have.
Converting does not undo lost detail
This is the part people get wrong. Converting a JPG to PNG will not restore the detail JPG already discarded. It just stores the damaged version losslessly, usually in a much larger file. Going the other way, PNG to JPG, does reduce size meaningfully. Always convert from the best original you have rather than from a copy that has already been through compression.
