Why scans come out sideways
Scanners and phone cameras record an orientation flag, and PDF readers do not always interpret it the way you expect. The result is a document that is perfectly readable on paper but appears rotated 90 or 180 degrees on screen, forcing everyone who opens it to tilt their head or rotate the view manually. Fixing it once, in the file itself, saves every future reader that annoyance.
Rotation does not reduce quality
This is worth knowing, because people often assume editing a PDF degrades it. Rotating only changes the orientation value stored for each page; the underlying text and images are untouched. Your document comes out exactly as sharp as it went in, whether it is crisp digital text or a scanned image, and the file size stays essentially the same.
Choosing the angle
- 90 degrees: for pages scanned sideways, the most common problem.
- 180 degrees: for pages that came out completely upside down.
- 270 degrees: for pages rotated the other way, equivalent to turning left.
- If you are unsure, try 90 first and check the result; converting again costs nothing.
