Why photos arrive sideways
Phone cameras always save the sensor image the same way round and add a small orientation tag telling software how to display it. Most apps read that tag, some do not, and the ones that ignore it show your photo rotated. This is why a picture looks correct in your gallery and then appears sideways after uploading. Rotating the image properly rewrites the pixels themselves, so it looks right everywhere regardless of whether the tag is honoured.
Rotating and flipping are not the same thing
Rotation turns the image around its centre, so a portrait photo becomes landscape at 90 degrees. Flipping mirrors it, swapping left and right without changing the dimensions. Mirroring matters more than people expect: selfie cameras usually flip the preview so it feels like a mirror, which is why your saved selfie can look subtly wrong compared to what you saw on screen. Flipping it back fixes that.
Things worth knowing
- Never mirror an image containing text, because the text will read backwards.
- Rotating in 90 degree steps is lossless, so nothing degrades.
- Flip a selfie horizontally if it looks different from the camera preview.
