What a watermark can and cannot do
A watermark will not stop a determined person from removing it, and it was never going to. What it does is make casual reuse inconvenient and obvious. Someone scrolling past will not bother cropping and retouching your image to avoid crediting you, and anyone who does republish it carries your name along with it. That is the realistic goal: friction and attribution, not protection.
Placing it so it survives a crop
A watermark tucked neatly into a corner is the easiest thing in the world to crop out. If the point is to make removal awkward, place it across the middle of the subject at low opacity, where cutting it out would take the subject with it. If the point is simply to sign your work, a corner is fine and looks far better. Decide which you are doing before you place it.
Practical settings
- Around 30 to 50 percent opacity is visible without ruining the image.
- Use your name or domain rather than a generic word like Copyright.
- Keep it small enough to read but not large enough to dominate.
- Watermark the export you share and keep the clean original for clients.
