Why square photos break round frames
Almost every profile picture on the internet is displayed as a circle, but almost every photo is saved as a rectangle. Most platforms handle this by cropping to the centre, which is why heads end up cut off and important detail disappears at the edges. Cropping to a circle yourself means you decide what stays inside the frame rather than leaving it to an automatic centre crop.
Transparency is what makes it work
A circular crop saved as a JPG is not really circular. JPG cannot store transparency, so the corners are filled with white, and the moment you place that image on any coloured background the square reappears. Saving as a PNG keeps the corners genuinely empty, so the image sits as a clean circle on whatever is behind it. If your round photo shows a white box, it was saved in the wrong format.
Getting a good profile picture
