PNG is a lossless format, which means it stores every pixel exactly as it is with no compression artefacts. That makes it the right choice for logos, screenshots, graphics with text, and any image you plan to edit repeatedly. This converter turns your JPG into a PNG in a single step. Keep in mind that converting will not recover detail the JPG already lost, but it will stop any further quality loss from that point on.
What PNG gives you that JPG cannot
Two things, and they are the only two reasons to convert. PNG supports transparency, so a logo or an icon can sit on any background without a white box behind it. And PNG is lossless, so once an image is in that format, saving and re-saving it will not degrade it further the way repeatedly editing a JPG does. If you need neither of those, JPG is usually the better choice because it is much smaller.
Converting does not restore lost detail
This is the part that catches people out. JPG compression permanently discards information, and converting the result to PNG does not bring any of it back. What you get is the already damaged image stored losslessly, usually in a considerably larger file. The conversion is worth doing when you need transparency or a lossless working copy, and it is not a way to improve a low quality photo.
When each format is right
- Logos, icons and anything needing transparency: PNG.
- Screenshots with text: PNG, because JPG makes small text look smeared.
- Photographs for the web: JPG or WebP, since PNG files are far larger for no visible gain.
- An image you will keep editing: PNG, so repeated saves do not degrade it.
