What this actually does

Worth being straightforward about: this is an image filter, not an artist. It detects edges in your photo and renders them as lines, then softens the rest, which produces something that reads as a pencil drawing. It is not generating an original artwork and it is not interpreting the subject. That means the result depends almost entirely on the photo you start with, and no setting will rescue a picture that lacks clear edges.

Photos that convert well

The effect works by finding contrast, so images with clear boundaries between shapes produce the best lines. A well lit portrait against a plain background, a building with strong architectural edges, or a single object with a defined outline all sketch nicely. Photos that struggle are the ones where the subject blends into the background, anything shot in flat light, and busy scenes where the filter finds edges everywhere and produces noise.

Getting a better result

• Increase contrast slightly on the original before converting.
• Crop tightly to your subject so the filter is not distracted by the background.
• Higher resolution originals give finer, more convincing lines.
• Try a few strength settings, since the right amount varies a lot between photos.
