WebP is a modern format that gives excellent quality at a small size, which is why so many websites use it. The problem comes when you save a WebP image and an older program, printer or app refuses to open it. The format that will not open
WebP is now the default on a large part of the web, which means images saved from a browser increasingly arrive as .webp files. That is efficient for the site and inconvenient for you, because older photo viewers, some office software, a few upload forms and plenty of printing services still do not accept it. Converting to JPG is usually the fastest way to make the file behave normally.
What the conversion costs
WebP and JPG are both lossy, so converting between them means the image is decoded and re-encoded, and a small amount of quality is lost in the process. On a photograph at reasonable quality settings that loss is not visible. What you should avoid is converting back and forth repeatedly, because each round trip compounds the damage. Convert once, from the best copy you have, and keep that result.
One thing to watch
- WebP supports transparency and JPG does not, so a transparent background becomes solid, usually white or black.
- If the image has transparency you want to keep, convert to PNG rather than JPG.
- Animated WebP files will not survive as a JPG, since JPG has no animation.
- For anything you are uploading, check what the form accepts before converting, since some now take WebP directly.
