Job portals, government forms and websites love to set strict upload limits: your passport photo must be under 50KB, your document under 100KB, and so on. Getting an image below a specific size without turning it into a blurry mess is a skill worth having, and it takes about ten seconds.
Target size vs quality
Compression works by removing detail the eye barely notices. Set a target size, and the tool reduces the image as close to it as possible while keeping the best quality it can. If the first attempt is still too big, nudge the target down and try again; each pass is instant because it all happens in your browser.
Get under the limit reliably
- Resize first if the image is huge. A 4000px photo does not need to stay that large for a form.
- Then compress to your target size, such as 50KB or 100KB.
- Use JPG for photos; it compresses far smaller than PNG.
- Check the final size before uploading so there are no surprises.
