Why creators pull thumbnails

The most common reason is research. Looking at what the top performing videos in your niche actually do, side by side, tells you more about framing, contrast, face size and text length than any general advice will. Collecting them into a reference board makes patterns obvious that are invisible when you scroll past one at a time. It is also useful for checking how your own thumbnail holds up at small size next to your competition.

Every video has several thumbnail versions generated automatically. The full resolution one is 1280 by 720 and is what you want for anything you are studying closely or displaying. Below that sit progressively smaller versions used in search results, sidebars and mobile listings. Not every video has the maximum resolution version, particularly older uploads, which is why the available sizes differ between videos.
