Two systems, one everyday problem
Most of the world measures in metric while a few countries, most notably the United States, still use imperial for daily life. That split turns up constantly: a recipe in cups, a height in feet, a parcel weight in pounds, a temperature in Fahrenheit, a running distance in miles. Converting in your head means remembering conversion factors you probably learned once and have not used since.
The conversions people look up most
- Length: centimetres to inches, metres to feet, kilometres to miles
- Weight: kilograms to pounds, grams to ounces
- Temperature: Celsius to Fahrenheit, which needs an offset as well as a multiplier
- Volume: litres to gallons, millilitres to cups
- Area: square metres to square feet, and acres to hectares for land
The ones worth being careful with
Temperature is the usual trap, because Celsius and Fahrenheit do not share a zero point. You cannot simply multiply, which is why mental shortcuts drift badly at extremes. Volume is the other one: a US gallon and an imperial gallon are different sizes, as are US and imperial pints, so a recipe that says pint means different amounts depending on where it was written.
