Splitting a bill without the argument
The awkward part of a group meal is rarely the total. It is working out the tip, dividing everything by however many people are present, and doing it in your head while everyone waits. Getting it slightly wrong means someone quietly covers the difference. Working it out properly takes a moment and removes the whole negotiation.
Tipping is not the same everywhere
Customs vary enormously and getting it wrong is uncomfortable in both directions. In the United States tipping is effectively part of the wage and 15 to 20 percent is expected. Across much of Europe service is often included and rounding up is enough. In Japan tipping can be seen as impolite. In much of South Asia and the Middle East a service charge frequently appears on the bill already. Checking the bill before adding anything is always worth doing.
Practical points
- Check for an existing service charge so you are not tipping twice.
- Whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total is a matter of preference, and the difference is small.
- For an uneven split, work out each share first and apply the tip proportionally.
- Rounding up to a clean number is normal and makes settling up much easier.
