Recording without installing anything

Screen recording used to mean downloading software, and on a work or shared computer that is often not even possible. Modern browsers can capture the screen directly, so a recording is a permission prompt away. It is genuinely useful for showing someone a bug rather than describing it, walking a colleague through a process, or keeping a copy of something you cannot easily save.

Choosing what to capture

You will usually be offered three options: the entire screen, a single application window, or one browser tab. Picking a window or a tab rather than the whole screen is almost always the better choice, because it keeps your notifications, other tabs, bookmarks and desktop out of the recording. It is far easier than editing something out afterwards, and it avoids accidentally sharing something private.

Getting a recording worth watching

• Close anything with notifications before you start.
• Decide whether you need microphone audio, and check it is picked up before recording the real take.
• Move deliberately and slowly. Fast cursor movement is hard to follow on playback.
• Long recordings use a lot of memory, so record in shorter sections.
• The recording is produced on your device and downloads directly to you.
