Where numbers have to be spelled out
Writing an amount in words alongside the figures is a fraud control, not a formality. A digit can be altered or a decimal point moved, and the words alongside expose it immediately. That is why cheques carry both, and why contracts, invoices and legal agreements routinely repeat an amount in words in brackets after the numerals.
The conventions differ by region
English speaking countries generally group numbers in thousands, millions and billions. South Asia uses lakh for a hundred thousand and crore for ten million, and financial documents in the region are written that way as a matter of course. The two systems are not interchangeable, so a document must consistently use whichever one its readers and its jurisdiction expect.
Things to check
- Decide how to write the decimal part. Cheques usually use a fraction of a hundred rather than words.
- Include the currency in the written form, since the figure alone is ambiguous.
- Watch the hyphens, because twenty-one is hyphenated and one hundred is not.
- For anything legal or financial, check the exact wording your institution requires.
