The tags that actually matter

The title tag is the single most important piece of on-page SEO, and it is the blue headline in search results. The meta description does not affect ranking directly but heavily influences whether anyone clicks, which makes it worth writing properly. Open Graph and Twitter card tags control what appears when your link is shared, and getting them wrong is why a shared link sometimes shows the wrong image or no preview at all.

Lengths, and what happens when you exceed them

• Title: aim for 50 to 60 characters. Longer gets truncated with an ellipsis.
• Description: around 150 to 160 characters, and it is cut off rather than wrapped.
• Open Graph image: 1200 by 630 pixels, which is the ratio every platform crops toward.
• Every page needs its own title and description. Duplicates across pages are a genuine problem.

One tag you can stop worrying about

The meta keywords tag does nothing. Google has ignored it for well over a decade, after it was abused so heavily that it became worthless as a signal. Plenty of generators still produce it and plenty of guides still recommend it, but adding it will not help your ranking. Spend that effort on the title, the description and the canonical tag instead, all of which do real work.
