Calculate your grade point average in minutes. Add each course with its grade and credit hours, and the tool computes your weighted GPA on a 4.0 scale, updating as you go. It is perfect for students tracking their academic progress, and runs entirely in your browser.

Why credits change everything

A grade point average is weighted, not a simple average of your grades. Each course contributes in proportion to its credit hours, so a top grade in a one credit elective moves your GPA far less than the same grade in a four credit core subject. This is the single most misunderstood part of GPA, and it is why students are sometimes surprised that a good result barely shifted the number.

How the calculation works

Each letter grade maps to a grade point, commonly 4.0 for an A down to 0 for an F. Multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, add all the quality points together, then divide by the total credit hours. That weighting is what makes it an average of your effort rather than an average of your letters.

Before you trust the number

  • Scales differ. Some institutions use 4.0, others 5.0 or 10.0, and some award pluses and minuses.
  • Check whether your institution counts failed or retaken courses in the average.
  • Pass or fail courses usually carry credit but no grade points.
  • Cumulative GPA covers everything so far, while semester GPA covers only that term.
  • Your institution's official transcript is the authoritative figure. Use this to plan, not to prove.
