Why the bill rises faster than your usage

Most electricity tariffs are banded, which means the price per unit increases as you consume more. Cross from one band into the next and the extra units are charged at a higher rate, so a modest rise in consumption can produce a bill that looks disproportionate. This is also why reducing usage by a small amount, if it takes you back under a band boundary, can save more than the units themselves are worth.

What is actually on the bill

The units you consumed are only part of it. Bills typically add fixed meter or service charges, taxes and duties, and often surcharges that have nothing to do with how much you used. That is why the total rarely equals units multiplied by the headline rate. A calculator gives you the energy portion, which is the part you can influence, and the fixed charges will sit on top of it.
