The stacked discount trap
Two 25 percent discounts applied one after another do not make 50 percent off. Take a price of 100, remove 25 percent to reach 75, then remove 25 percent of 75 and you land on 56.25, not 50. The second discount is calculated from the already reduced price. Shops present stacked offers this way precisely because the total sounds larger than it is, and the arithmetic is easy to get wrong at the till.
Reading offers for what they are
Buy one get one free is 50 percent off, but only if you wanted two. Buy two get one free is a third off across three items. A percentage off the second item only is worth far less than it sounds. And a discount from an inflated original price is not a discount at all, which is why checking what the item usually sells for matters more than the size of the percentage.
Quick sense checks
- 10 percent off is simply moving the decimal point one place left.
- For 15 percent, take 10 percent then add half of it again.
- For 33 percent, dividing by three is close enough to judge an offer.
- Work out what you save in currency, not percent. A big percentage of a small amount is still a small amount.
