The pages that should not be there
Almost every PDF that has been through a scanner or been assembled from other files carries something unwanted. A blank sheet the feeder pulled through, a duplicate page scanned twice, a fax cover, an internal note that should not go to a client, or a terms page that belongs to a different document. Removing them is faster than rebuilding the file, and it keeps everything else exactly as it was.
Deleting, splitting and extracting are different jobs
Deleting keeps the document and removes a few pages from it. Splitting breaks one document into several separate files. Extracting pulls a range out into a new file and usually leaves the original untouched. People reach for the wrong one regularly. If you want the document minus two pages, delete. If you want only pages 4 to 9 as their own file, extract.
Before you export
- Work from page numbers you have actually checked, not the ones printed on the page, which may not match.
- Delete in one pass rather than several, because indexes shift after each removal.
- Open the result and skim it, since an off by one error is easy to make and easy to miss.
- Keep the original until you are certain, because deletion cannot be undone in the exported file.
