Counting days by hand goes wrong quickly
Working out the gap between two dates seems simple until a month boundary, a 31 day month or a leap year gets involved. Miscounting by a day or two matters for notice periods, visa durations, contract terms, project deadlines and anything with a penalty attached. Calculating it exactly takes a second and removes the doubt.
Inclusive or exclusive, and why it matters
There is a real ambiguity in the question. From the 1st to the 3rd could be two days, if you count the gaps, or three, if you count the days themselves. Contracts, notice periods and hotel bookings do not all use the same convention. When a duration has consequences, check which one the document means rather than assuming, because the difference is exactly one day and that is often the day that counts.
