How to Make Your Photo Exactly the Right Size for an Exam or Job Form (Free, Online)

Make a photo 20KB, 50KB or any exact size an exam or job form asks for. Learn how to compress, resize and crop a photo for a form upload without losing readability, and always check the form's current limit first.

Exam and job forms are strict about photo size for a reason: a form system has to store millions of photos, so it sets a limit like 20KB or 50KB and rejects anything larger. That rejection is frustrating when your photo looks fine, because the problem is not the photo, it is the file size. The good news is that you can usually reach the exact size with three steps in your browser, without an app.

Check the form's limit first

Limits change from form to form and from year to year, so always read the current instructions on the form itself before you start. Some forms ask for a size range, some for a maximum, and some for exact dimensions as well as size. This guide shows the method, not a universal limit, because there is no single limit that applies to every form.

Step by step

  • Crop the photo to the subject first, so you are not wasting file size on background you do not need.
  • Resize it to the dimensions the form asks for, or to a sensible size for a photo, if no dimensions are given.
  • Compress it gradually, checking the file size after each step, until it is at or below the limit while the face and text stay readable.

Do not compress in one giant jump. A photo compressed too hard becomes blurry and can be rejected for quality even if the size is right. Small steps, with a size check each time, give you the smallest readable file.

All of this runs in your browser, so a personal photo for an application is never uploaded to a server. Keep the original photo as well, in case you need a different size for another form.
